"The Ghost of Flight
401"
On December 29, 1972,
Eastern Airline's Flight 401 was preparing to land in Miami,
Florida. The crew included Captain Robert Loft and Flight
Engineer Don Repo. A routine landing became anything but,
as the plane crashed in the Florida Everglades. Ninety-four
passengers and five crewmembers, including Loft and Repo,
died in the crash, which was blamed on "pilot error" by the
National Transportation Safety Board. After the crash and
subsequent investigation, usable parts of Flight 401 remained,
which were recycled for use on other Eastern Airline planes.
It was on those other airplanes where Loft and Repo appeared.
A flight engineer on one flight was carrying out the routine
pre-flight inspection, when Repo appeared and informed the
flight engineer that he had already completed the inspection.
On another flight, Repo's face appeared in the galley oven,
to the surprise of a flight attendant. The flight attendant
fetched two other crewmembers, who all witnessed the face
speak "Watch out for fire on this airplane." Interestingly,
that flight was cut short due to serious engine trouble. The
galley came from the wreckage of Flight 401. After several
other incidents, all from airplanes fitted with salvaged parts
from Flight 401, it is hard to discount this story. They say
that ghosts remain earthbound, due to "unfinished business"
with the living. An airline captain reported that Repo appeared
to him and said, "There will never be another crash, we will
not let it happen." Could it be that guilt fueled the need
for Repo to save Eastern from other potential tragedies? It
is also said that ghosts can be attached to "things", and
the use of salvaged airplane parts would provide the means
for Repo to stay connected to Eastern Airline flights via
the parts from his ill-fated flight. Eastern Airlines had
the salvaged parts removed from their airplanes, due to the
ghostly sightings. Eastern Airlines experienced other air
disasters after Flight 401. In 1974, an Eastern Airlines plane
crashed in North Carolina. In 1975, an Eastern Airlines plane
crashed at New York's JFK Airport. In order for the legend
to remain true, either these two planes never had Flight 401
parts fitted, or any parts had beeen removed. If you know
the answer, email us.
